So how does a Celebrant-led wedding differ from that of a registrar or vicar? How do you know which one is best for you?

Well the answer is simpler than you think: a celebrant-led wedding is memorable, unique and meaningful. Of all the weddings that you have been to led by a registrar – were any of them in a place that was special to them; under a beautiful tree, on a beach or by a stunning lake?

Do any of them stand out for you in terms of how personal it was to the couple? Did it tell their love story? Did it feel like the registrar was a friend rather than a stranger?

Unfortunately, the answer is probably ‘no’.

As wedding ceremonies go, shouldn’t each one encapsulate the couple’s personalities, interests, quirks and their own love story; where they met, where their first date was (because each one is guaranteed to be individual) how their loved blossomed and most importantly when and where the proposal was? Guests love a love story but more significantly, we love hearing our own love story being told. It’s magical. It’s timeless. It’s ours.

Every single aspect of a wedding ceremony should be as important as the next part and what better way to capture your guests’ attention than to choose a reading which sums you both and your love up perfectly. It could be a passage from your favourite novel” or a poem that gives you goose bumps as it makes you think of the person you fell in love with.

Whatever the reading, poem or quote – it needs to be heard and needs to be yours. Encourage a family member or friend or child to read it for you to make it more meaningful and inclusive to your loved ones. Hearing your daughter, mother or grandmother read your favourite poem will not only guarantee a few tears among your guests…but a beautiful memory to take away with them.

A celebrant-led wedding is also the opportunity to celebrate your union with special elements that registrars and vicars aren’t allowed to conduct in their ceremonies. For example, a unity lantern ceremony which brings light and hope from the past, present and future, a ring warming ceremony where your guests can pass their positive wishes on to you both before you exchange your rings, or even signing a wedding parchment with your witnesses as a keepsake for you both.

And of course, the music. The music you choose to walk down the aisle to is one of the most important parts of the ceremony. It is the first time you see the person that you are choosing to be with in a completely different light. Your song reflects your feelings and emotions and you will remember it forever.

During your ceremony, usually when you sign the wedding parchment, you would choose another song for your guests to listen to and think about you, their own relationships and makes them feel the love that is circulating around the room.

Finally, the song you choose to walk back down the aisle to, again, is a memory that will last a long time. It’s a feel-good song which sums you and your new relationship up perfectly and your guests will think you every time they hear it.

You see, everything about your ceremony is about you, where you want it to be and what you want in your special moment. It is for you to celebrate the people around you, the people that are no longer with you and the people who will encourage, support and love you as you journey into your future together – and that is more special than anything else in the world.

It’s memorable. It’s unique. It’s meaningful.
